| Laptop Loan Agreement |
I understand that by borrowing a laptop from the Jefferson Parish Library I am solely responsible for the laptop computer and all components (hardware and software). I will reimburse the Library for any damages if the laptop or any software installed thereon is damaged, lost or stolen while checked out to me. The cost of replacing a laptop is $1,500.00. *** If a laptop is returned late, the patron will be fined $25 per hour until the max fine of $125 is reached. Any laptop not returned
by due date or closing time may be considered lost or stolen and the replacement cost of $1,500 plus the max fine of $125 will be charged. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office or local municipal police office will be notified. Please note that the library has the ability to track all laptops. |
I agree that I will not alter any settings or configurations on the laptop, nor will I save anything to the hard drive of the laptop. I understand that printing cannot be done from the laptop and that the laptops do not have a floppy disk drive. |
I understand that the loan period for borrowing a laptop is two (2) hours. I also understand that laptops must be returned to library staff at least thirty (30) minutes prior to library closing, even if this does not allow me to use the laptop for the entire 2-hour loan period. The power must be kept on when returning a laptop, so the components can be checked. |
I understand that when the loan period has elapsed I must return the laptop to a staff member at the service or information desk. Until the laptop has been placed in the hands of a library staff member and checked in, it is my responsibility. |
I understand that the library will not be held responsible for any damage or loss of data or media due to any cause while using a library computer. |
I understand that Library wireless connections are not secure, and I will take appropriate caution with personal information while using library computers. I also understand that I am expected to abide by the same Jefferson Parish Internet Use Policy used for the PC workstations. |

| How it Works |
Each laptop has a wireless card that sends and receives information via the network. |
The laptop battery should last about 2 - 4 hours. Some activities will deplete the battery more quickly. When the battery is running low, a warning message will appear. Save Your Work Often! |
A touch pad, located below the keyboard, is used instead of a mouse. Lightly move your finger to control the cursor. The keys below the touch pad function as the right and left mouse buttons. |
| |
| Getting Started |
Place the laptop on a flat surface with the DELL label facing up. |
To open the cover, press the latch, located on the front surface and lift up the cover. |
The ON switch is located above the keyboard. Turn on the laptop by pressing the ON button. It will take the laptop a minute to boot up. |
| |
| |
TIP: The laptop will go into a power saving mode and appear to be turned off
when you close the lid. To reactivate touch the mouse pad. |
| |
| BATTERY AND AC POWER |
You may choose to use the AC power adaptor or work on battery power alone. |
| |
| Using the AC Adapter |
You can connect the AC power adaptor with the laptop turned either on or off. |
The power input is located at the rear of the laptop next to the two ports on the right side if you are facing the rear of the laptop. |
The AC power adaptor will charge the battery and power the laptop. |
| |
| Using the Battery |
The battery should last approximately 2-4 hours. Actual performance time will depend on the applications used. |
The amount of charge left on a battery can be checked by holding the cursor over the battery status indicator (looks like a battery) located on the bottom right hand of the tool bar. A box should pop up showing the % of battery life left. If the box doesn't pop up, double-click on the icon |
| |
| SAVING YOUR WORK |
| Save your work often! The battery should last for from 2-4 hours, but some hard drive intensive activities will deplete the battery more quickly. |
Printing is not available from the laptop. You will need to save your work to a CD-R/RW or USB memory stick (provided by you). |
Please use CD-R/RWs, USB memory sticks or your e-mail to save your documents. DO NOT turn off the laptop until you have saved your work. All files are erased when the laptop is restarted. |
CD-R/RW disks and USB memory sticks can be purchased from the Reference Desk. |
USB memory sticks will automatically show up as a removable drive in My Computer, when inserted into a USB slot. |
NERO Burning Rom CD writing software is installed on all laptops. Double-click on the "Nero Burning Rom" shortcut on the desktop to run the program. A CD writing wizard will appear to assist in burning a CD. |
Library staff does not provide assistance in the use of either hardware or software. |
