Documentary Screening: Pan Am Flight 759
Jefferson and Napoleon Rooms, East Bank Regional Library, Metairie
Pan Am Flight 759 crashed less than a minute after it took off on a stormy afternoon from New Orleans International Airport on July 9, 1982. The Boeing 727 jet bound for Las Vegas plowed into south Kenner’s Morningside Park neighborhood, killing all 146 people on board and eight people on the ground. At the time, it was the nation’s second-deadliest crash. Royd Anderson created the documentary that examines the crash and its aftermath.

Wednesday Matinee (documentary): From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China
Jefferson and Napoleon Rooms, East Bank Regional Library, Metairie
In 1979, internationally acclaimed classical violinist Isaac Stern was invited to perform concerts in China and gave a series of master classes to talented Chinese musicians at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music -- an extraordinary cultural exchange chronicled in this classic documentary. Also included is the newer film Musical Encounters, which tracks Stern as he returns to China, 20 years later, and catches up with his old students.

Boating Safety Class, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries
Jefferson and Napoleon Rooms, East Bank Regional Library, Metairie
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries offers a free boating class that lasts between six and eight hours that is usually completed in a day. The course includes information on choosing a boat, classification, hulls, motors, legal requirements and equipment requirements, many navigation rules, navigation charts, trailering, sailboats, and related subjects that include canoeing, personal watercraft and more. Completion of the course will result in the student being issued a vessel operators certification card.

Calligraphic Visual Journal Experience

Anyone who has used a pencil and paper can create beautiful images from repetitive patterns. By deliberate strokes, simple lines become unique creations of art with unexpectedly intricate results. Instant gratification. Similar strokes transform into the italic alphabet, opening a window of possibilities into the world of calligraphy. LaVerne Parfait has more than 30 years of experience as a calligrapher and is a lover of the written word. LaVerne is a member of the New Orleans Lettering Arts Association, the Association for the Calligraphic Arts, and International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting.

Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Nick Frost, Toby Jones, Mackenzie Crook and Cary Elwes also lend their talents to this action-packed family adventure.

Louisiana Movie History: Louisiana Story (1948, 79 minutes)

Told from the perspective of a young Cajun boy living on the bayou, this poetic and visually arresting film by director Robert J. Flaherty dramatizes the installation of an oil derrick and its effects on the surrounding land and its people. Newly restored, this Oscar-nominated, Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece -- the last film by "father of the documentary" Flaherty -- has a much-deserved spot on the National Film Registry.

TWO PARTER The Impossible Planet (Part 1), originally aired on June 3, 2006. The TARDIS lands in a base on a planet orbiting a black hole, an impossible situation that stumps even the Tenth Doctor. The base crew are drilling to the center of the world, to claim the power that keeps it in orbit for the good of the Human Empire. However, an ancient evil is down there too and he is awake. The Satan Pit (Part 2), originally aired on June 10, 2006. With the TARDIS seemingly lost, Rose and the remaining humans are trapped on the base with the possessed Ood, while the planet floats helplessly towards a black hole. Meanwhile, the Tenth Doctor is about to discover exactly what "Beast" is trapped in the heart of the impossible planet.
